We have thoroughly been enjoying perusing your stache pics on our Posterous Page, almost as much as watching John Cleese show off his stache in the mid 70's. Great roll model. Make sure to get your final votes in before midnight on Monday, November 30th. We'll be selecting one lucky duster to receive the Mad Stache Trophy.

Rally your team together for these final hours. Gettysburg has been a strong contender from the beginning, but I know there are a few other schools out there that want the Mad Stache Trophy BAD. The engraver is standing with pen in hand waiting for our call... Will it be your team?

We're on the edge of our seats waiting to find out the final score. Can you feel it in the air?

On Thursday, when you are sitting with your families at home... take just one moment to look back at these short few weeks and what you have accomplished. A few young men had an idea, and it struck the heart of a nation. You've tackled a disease that claims a man every 19 minutes and declared war.

Having said that, the week is not over. And let's cut to the chase... if you have a big fat $0 next to your name, this is your chance to step out from the shadows and help your team to victory. Each week, we've awarded an individual fundraiser with something cool. This week, we're offering the entire package: custom Oakleys, a pair of Newton Running shoes AND a free round trip ticket anywhere JetBlue flies... for anyone who raises a minimum of $1000 between Friday, 5pm EST, November 20th and the end of the event.

By now your face is probably getting really itchy, and you may be struggling with your donations. With regard to the latter, here are our top three tips:

Send out your fundraising page link at least THREE TIMES. Trust us, three is a lucky number, and even your friends will ignore the first two.

Get together with your team and brainstorm doing a mini event to raise money (aka party). Make this a community event at your school.

Ask ten friends to donate $10. Boom. Done. If it’s too easy, do it again.

Now onto the issue of managing that face of yours for the next two weeks…

According to hairboutique.com, when deciding upon the proper design for your mustache consider the following:

* Overall length of the mouth
* Size of the nose
* Size and fullness of the upper lip area
* Overall width of the cheeks
* Shape and width of the jaws and chin area
* Density of hair growth
* Facial hair color and texture
* Current mustache fashions and trends

Procedures For Trimming A Mustache

Remember that if you trim your own mustache that it can leave a trail of pesky little hairs. Plan your trimming in advance, allow yourself plenty of time and perform the trimming in an area that can be easily cleaned.

There are two basic parts to trimming a mustache. One is to define and adjust the overall length of your mustache hair. The other one is the shape of the mustache.

Some men prefer to use a comb and sharp mustache scissors to trim their mustache. Others prefer the commercial trimmers made by companies like Conair, Remington, Braun and similar.

Cover your clothing with a towel or plastic drape or cap like used in a salon or barber shop.

Stand back and look at your mustache in a mirror with a good light source to determine the areas that need to be trimmed and/or shaped.

Comb your mustache so that all the hairs are laying in the same direction.

Trim the mustache length first. When you are trimming length, keep in mind that just as the hair grows in different directions, you must trim in multiple directions. You will basically have to trim both with and against the grain to catch the hairs that are bent over.

If trimming with a comb and a scissors, comb against the grain of the mustache hair, to get it to stand up against the normal grain. Then use the scissors and cut against the base of the comb to achieve a uniform length. Remember to take your time and work carefully. Once you chop hair, you can’t glue it back on.

If you use a trimmer, set the trimmer height to the desired closeness and then use the trimmers with its built-in guide to achieve a uniform length. Even though you go mainly against the grain you will also have to trim from the sides because not all hair will grow uniformly.

Work from side to side until you have trimmed the mustache hairs to the desired length.

Be sure to check the length or the mustache for evenness at both corners of the mouth.

Once you are completely happy with the length of the mustache, shape the mustache with your scissors and comb or your trimmer.

Good luck, and may the force be with you.

Each week, we’ll offer a cool prize on Friday to the highest fundraiser of the week. The winner is the person to raise the highest amount from that Monday 12am EST to Friday 5pm EST. Last week, Andrew Coskey took home some sweet custom Oakleys for raising an amazing $1100.

In addition to fundraising, remember to document the hair on your face and post pics on the posterous page. This makes us laugh here at headquarters, which makes us feel like giving away more cool stuff.

Steele Stanwick of UVa Men’s Lacrosse is one of hundreds of talented collegiate lacrosse players who, just one short week ago, used to have a respectable clean shave. Then something strange happened… Steele was struck by the ‘Stache Madness phenomenon that has been hitting young lacrosse players like him nationwide, and now there is nothing we can do for him but sit back and watch it grow.

His future seemed so bright. Now, it just seems, well, doomed to catch the tangled trinkets of lunch and crusted midnight jugs of milk on his upper lip. I know. Dirty dusters are disgusting and strangely cool.

We’ve conducted one study that may show there is but one cure for Steele and our other beloved lacrosse players: money. That’s right. Hard cold cash for an incredible cause. These men are raising money for a cause near and dear to their heart: prostate cancer research, a disease that currently affects 1 in 6 American men. A man dies every 19 minutes from this disease, and these boys are looking out for their futures and their families.

To support the end to this madness, and to support your favorite lacrosse team and player, please click on the DONATE button to the left.

Otherwise, we’ll have to witness the discomfort of facial hair far longer than anyone should have to reasonably suffer.

Event History

Last year, Rebecca Vozzo was working with Quinnipiac University as their Athletic Trainer for the men’s lacrosse team. Her dad had recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and she wanted to fight back in a way that would honor his struggle and ultimate survivorship. She turned to her team and together they created an awesome fundraising event that culminated in a massive event around the QU vs. Notre Dame game. Alone, QU raised over $16,000 in one day.

After three great years with her team, Rebecca recently made the move to work with men’s lacrosse at the University of Virginia. Ken Clausen, a senior defenseman for the Cavaliers, had an idea for his team to do a fundraiser benefiting cancer research. And not only UVA men’s lacrosse, but why not get all the schools’ lacrosse teams involved in a national event?

Rebecca and Ken turned once more to the team, and they were all for it… and they had this wacky idea about growing some funky facial hair. And thus, Men’s Lacrosse Mustache Madness was born.

Prostate Cancer Statistics

* 1 in 6 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.
* Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America.
* A man is 35% more likely to develop prostate cancer than a woman is to develop breast cancer.

Every dollar raised by this event will go directly to funding prostate cancer research. Your donation is 100% tax deductible.
